Straight

Straight

1. Straight: heterosexual. Sexually or romantically attracted exclusively to people of the other sex. That’s all it is folks. But for some reason, it now means so much more. Unfortunately, we find ourselves in a world where the straight tale as old as time is now viewed as just that, an outdated and imaginative way of life.
But it’s not a tale is it? Being straight is a long-established, familiar, biological state of being. Unlike any other group that feels they are sexually or genetically a certain way, we are in fact that way with the biology to back it up.
So why does it matter? For the majority of us straights, it doesn’t. Nor does it matter what the identifiers of other people are. What does matter is the current state we find ourselves in. A place where simply being who we are seems to a problem.
“Damned if we do, damned if we don’t“ is essentially the corner we’ve been backed into. While simultaneously supporting our non-hetero friends and family, we’ve had to concede and been made to feel ashamed of being who we were born to be. So here we are, reclaiming our voice and our stake in the world.
Being straight does not mean we have power, are superior, or are more valued than people that are non-hetero. Being straight does mean, that we are men and women, no additional modifiers needed, we are viewed on the basis of our merits not who we are attracted to, and we represent the hallmark of the traditional family.
